Accessible only by boat or ferry, Caneel Bay is a 166-room resort that sits on 170-acres of the Virgin Islands National Park on St. John. Environmentalist Laurance Rockefeller opened the resort in 1956 as an exclusive nature retreat. Rooms here have no phones or TVs and a natural, casual décor featuring stone and wood. They’re spread across 18 buildings scattered on the property and are air-conditioned with coffeemakers, minibars, safes and free Wi-Fi. Many have furnished terraces, some of them directly on the beach. There are seven beaches on the property, two of them adults-only. The resort provides kayaks, sailboats and snorkel equipment. There’s twice-daily housekeeping, an outdoor pool, a fitness center and an activity room. Babysitting, children’s activities and spa services are available for a fee. The resort has five restaurants on-site and a bar/lounge. Afternoon tea is complementary. Caneel Bay is a 20-minute ferry ride from St. Thomas.
