Hotel 5th Avenue Inn & Suites Rochester (Rochester, USA)

Many folk visiting this area do so for access to the Mayo Clinic. On this point, the hotel couldn’t score more highly. They provide a Monday to Friday shuttle service and as it is just over half a mile away, it is easily walkable for many.

Too often, hotels consist of just your room and not much else. Consequently, guests miss out on the enjoyable social aspect. Here, though, there’s a shared lounge with huge TV, puzzles and books. Comfortable couches make it a great area in which to relax and share, with others, the day’s experiences.

Look around the area and see hotels with tariffs far in excess of these. Yes, the place has faults and needs updating but, for the most part, it is clean and very comfortable. Free breakfast and free parking continue to make it a real value for money option.

The lift is unreliable and worryingly on its last legs.

Rooms look clean enough but it’s a different story when you start looking in the very grimy corners. The vacuum cleaner is a stranger here! Certainly not what you’d call ‘clinically’ clean!

Everything seems very dated now, including even the bed linen and towels. In many ways, the hotel's stock in trade seems to be reduced to the easy access to the Mayo Clinic. That said, all buildings in the complex are linked via an underground system to the Clinic – except, strangely, this one. At the very least, it needs an urgent refurb.
