The Anker is situated in Philippolis, a small town in the Free State province, Republic of South Africa. Surrounded by lovely farms and mountains. Here you can truly switch off completely and forget about rush-hour traffic and deadlines. The tree-lined dirt roads, simple Karoo-style cottages and pomegranate and quince trees add to the tranquil feel of The Anker. We have five lovely self catering rooms, each with its own private entrance. Barbecue facilities and meat packs are available on request. Virtually in the centre of South Africa, lies the little historical town of Philippolis, renowned for its hospitality and convivial atmosphere. It is considered the oldest settlement in the Free State, and is the birthplace of the late Sir Laurens Jan van der Post, renowned author, political advisor to British heads of government, and godfather to HRH Prince Charles of Wales. Upper Voortrekker Street is a pine-lined avenue rich in historical buildings that include the Victorian Jacobson library and the Trans-Gariep Museum. Job House, an art gallery with a resident artist, is a must-see.
